Dedication - 'For my girls Taka and Dalvar in Trading with Death (Tales of the Unexpected #1)'
The call came bright,
Like her favourite tepui wren.
I twist on leaf mould, slippery dark brown,
Monsoon-deep around my ankles.
Save for the dripping of the rainforest,
Dark trunks soar to the canopy,
Whilst I, pale and breathless,
Scan the green-filtered light, eyes flitting like a bird’s.
I want to call out,
But the word hovers in my heart,
And cannot take flight,
It’s my unspoken whisper -
‘She’s left us,’ they said,
‘Gone to a better place’,
I tell you, I know she’s here,
By my shoulder, in my shadow, and in the light,
So, today, I shall run home again,
With my dear sister beside me.
